Jonathan Edgeworth

Jonathan is a Consultant Microbiologist at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital and Professor of Clinical Infectious Diseases at Kings College London.

For over 20 years he has conducted daily consult ward rounds on the St Thomas Hospital intensive care unit that includes both ECMO and high-consequence infectious diseases facilities. His research interests have been informed by personal experience of the challenges preventing, diagnosing and managing severe ICU infections, particularly in this era of increasing antimicrobial resistance and emerging infections.

This was highlighted during the pandemic, when his research team fast-tracked the evaluation of a proof-of-concept daily respiratory metagenomic service, the results of which surpassed expectation and informed development of this UK network. As the transformative potential of clinical metagenomics became clearer, he stepped back from clinical duties to join Oxford Nanopore Technologies on a part time basis as VP Medical Affairs to facilitate partnership working between industry and the NHS and now splits his time between London and Oxford.
